Josef came to this country July 15, 1923 aboard the Albert Ballin, which had sailed from Hamburg, Germany. He was accompanied by his mother, Anna, his brother, Rudolpf, and his sister, Emilie. Maurice White [Parents] was born in 1902 in Munkacz, Hungary. He died in 1970. He married Rose Lippner.
Maurice was brought to Cleveland, Ohio in 1921 by his uncle, Casper Rosenberg, a half brother of Maria Schwarz. He met Rose in Cleveland in 1921 at night school. They were married in 1923 and moved to Detroit, Michigan. Maurice had a variety of jobs, but for most of his adult life, he operated his own businees, a dry cleaning route. Other jobs were shoe salesman, factory worker, and owning a cafe in Oak Ridge. They lived in Oak Ridge from 1951-1955 and then moved to Chicago where Maurice later died in 1970.
Rose Lippner [Parents] [scrapbook] was born on 30 Mar 1900 in Hungary. She died on 8 Apr 1993 in Tampa, Florida. She married Maurice White.
Rose was born in Czechoslovakia and resided in Noveves, Slovakia. She came to the United States on September 30, 1921 aboard the Aquitania, which had departed from Southampton, England. Her passage was paid for by her aunt and uncle, Mary and S. A. Appel who were living in Cleveland, Ohio. Copies of the Ellis Island documents are in the pictures section.
In Cleveland, she met Maurice in 1921 at night school. They were married in 1923 and moved to Detroit, Michigan. They lived in Oak Ridge from 1951-1955 and then moved to Chicago where Maurice later died in 1970. In 1973, Rose moved to Miami, Florida. In 1982, she moved to Sarasota, Florida. In 1990, she moved to a retirement home (not a nursing home!) in Tampa, Florida, where she later died in 1993.
During her life, Rose worked as a secretary, an insurance agent, and cashier for Northwestern University. She learned to swim as an adult and became an accomplished diver. She lived on her own for many years after Maurice died. As she approached her 90's, her short-term memory was failing. Her family, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, were the most important things in her life. In 1991, when Blake Neuman was born, her life took on even more meaning as she looked forward to seeing "the little boy." Often, she would not recognize Bruce or Jo (Blake's parents) until she saw him. When Blake would visit her at the retirement home, she became the center of attention because all of the residents wanted to see the little boy. Blake, who was ordinarily very busy and inquisitive, would sit quietly and gently on her lap.
